Connie, the 'people' part of the equation is a given here.  Most folks that have discovered aquaponics have already had some transformative inspirational moment and now are interested in making their dream a reality.  Those same…

Spider mites are the single biggest pest I have ever fought, and I still fight them. My advice is to pick an arsenal of weapons that work for you, and then alternate through those weapons in a twice per week war. They are easy to kill, virtually…

I have kept mussels and crayfish (marmokrebs) together before and the crays attacked the mussels, primarily chewing on the mantle.  I only had about a dozen mussels in the tank and I believe the crays killed most of them, though the mussels did…

I found some poly tanks of a good depth (child proofing is required) but they are expensive especially with shipping: http://www.pondsolutions.com/holding-tanks.htm

All very good discussion points. I appreciate it. Questioning everything is part of being a good consumer and businessperson. I agree that the clearer a person is, going into a business venture, the better they are at staying focused and navigating…

Aquapones in Saudi Arabia is slowly growing

Thank God! A year after my amazing discovery of this God-sent method of gardening/farming, we are slowly growing.  A week ago I met Khalid, who also lives in Jeddah and who had been doing, or at least attempting to do Aquaponics.   We discussed his challenges and to help him kick-start again the halted project, I gave him a siphon using the Affnan technique. Inshallah, God willing, he will restart again soon, I was also blessed to be given some worms, duckweeds and a grape seedling....A few…See More

On the nose there steve.  I hate when people exaggerate the claims about aquaponics and then people get all discouraged that there are not tomatoes popping off the vines three weeks after they have set up a brand new system.  Patience is…

Yep Chip, that is about it.  Whatever works well for you.  There are so many different little details that affect everything that it can become really hard to make short, generalized, definitive statements.

I will run out and get the oils now. I just need to figure out how those percentages work out in measurements that I can actually use. If I am making a 16 oz solution, how many teaspoons of oil and soap. Good thing I studied math in school.

TCLynx replied to Kobus Jooste's discussion 'Aquaponics, worms and E. coli'
I haven't heard any updates. However I believe letting the compost age for 4 months after the last addition of any manure or stuff that would support e. coli growth is a good practice for safety.
