Just starting out, the biggest problem was finding out where to buy the parts needed to construct an aquaponics system on Maui. Of course, ordering online is always an option, but the shipping cost…Continue

I was wondering if anybody on Maui has been having the same problem as I'm having here. I just lost an entire crop of cucumbers, pumpkins, and gourds this week. I have been told it is fruit flies…Continue

Just a reminder, the spawning workshop will be held this Saturday at 10 am at UH-Maui College. In addition to the original workshop there will be an added short presentation explaining the CTAHR RISK Management program. Briefly, the RISK presentation will detail five risk areas in agriculture and aquaculture (see revised announcement). Please contact me by e-mail (howerton@hawaii.edu) or cell phone (268-3246) if you have not already done so and would like to attend the workshop.

Comment by Larry Yonashiro on May 18, 2012 at 2:59pm Email from Joan Ako, CTAHR Manoa. This seems to have been covered already by Bob Howerton on the catfish workshop, but Joan included a new attachment. I'm assuming that Bob already has a list of those attending that contacted him.
Dear Maui Participants,
Attached to this message is an upcoming Maui workshop that you may be interested in attending. Seating is limited to only 40 individuals and an RSVP is required to reserve a seat. Final date to RSVP is May 25, 2012. Contact Robert Howerton: howerton@hawaii.edu or by phone: 808-268-3246. See attachment for more details.

FYIà please see announcement below
Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP)
HACCP is a management system in which food safety is addressed through the analysis and control of biological, chemical, and physical hazards from raw material production, procurement and handling, to manufacturing, distribution and consumption of the finished product. I took this course a few years ago and found it to be very informative.
I have recently updated the Maui Aquaponics distribution list so once again, please let me know if you want to be removed from this list. Feel free to pass this on to any others who may be interested.

We have scheduled the HCG workshop for 5/26 (see attachment). Please feel free to pass this on to anyone else you feel may be interested. As mentioned previously, HCG is used to spawn Chinese catfish, one of the most expensive fish for local markets. Most Chinese catfish fingerlings are shipped to Maui, few are produced on island. This could be a good opportunity for one to provide fingerlings to Maui producers. Please contact me if you are interested in attending this workshop. Attendance is limited.
Thanks,
Bob H.

Comment by Larry Yonashiro on April 20, 2012 at 4:14pm Jennifer - The flyer for the spawning workshop is just a sample that Robert Howerton wanted to include for our information. That one was on Oahu. Robert will be working on a flyer for us Maui folks that will include location and date of the workshop, which will be distributed shortly.

Drs’ Clyde Tamaru (CTAHR) and Dr. Michael Wong (UH) would like to hold a workshop on Maui (see attached flyer) about spawning induction in finfish. Chinese catfish need to be artificially induced to spawn in captivity using HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Chinese catfish do very well in aquaponics production units and there is a very good market for them at better prices than tilapia. They are a very hardy species and are air breathersà no aeration is needed. Please let me know if you are interested in attending this workshop. There will be no charge.
