Roger, yes you want the water to enter the fish tank above the water line and you want the outflow from the fish tank to be up high enough that the water level in the fish tank will remain fairly stable.  The grow beds are what will fluctuate in water level as will the sump.  If you are running a single pump system, you shouldn't need a float switch.  Either the siphons in the grow beds will take care of flooding and draining or a timer will be turning the pump on/off.

Your very welcome.

Thanks for sharing....I think you may have just answered one of my bigger questions.  Thanks!

The switch itself controls the power that goes through the plug. Once the switch hits the level that you want, it will make the connection inside of the switch housing and the current will flow through turning on the pump.

Yep. You will be able to adjust the float level to where ever you need it.

Jim - So, if I rubberbanded the tether switch to where it would turn on at 4 inches of water depth in the sump tank,  would it cut the pump on as long as the pump was plugged into the back of the tether switch power plug?

Comment by Jim Rusk yesterday

This tether is designed to just plug your pump into the piggyback plug. So it will work with both.

Comment by Roger Emmick yesterday

Or could you plug the pump into the back of the tether cord power plug?

Comment by Tom OBrien yesterday

Roger - I have the same problem with sump tank size on my new system, so I just put the pump in the fish tank for now. You can buy a separate sump pump switch that will work with your FT pump and that do the trick as a safety switch if the water in the sump tank gets too low. But turning the pump off may bring the flood and drain cycling to a stop and force you to manually operate your system.

Comment by Roger Emmick yesterday

Jim - Could this tether be connected a regular pump or only sump pumps?
