Welcome to all new members!  Sorry a couple of you had to wait a few days to get approved.  I have been elbow deep in the "unglamorous" part of aquaponics the last few days.

I have several females brooding and will have plenty of new fry soon so anyone that wants some let me know!

Hey Sam,

I caught up some of the fish in my 3,000 gal FT to see if any of them had mouths full of eggs or fry, not yet the water hasn't gotten above 72 so far. Those fish are from a breeder in Dunnellon and look like your fish, the males are 9 to 12 inches. I'm going to cross your fish with them and your welcome to some males if you are interested.

@Larry - That's great news!  It's wonderful to hear of the multiplying. Here in Port Orange we too had a mild winter and with heaters in my IBC tanks it wasn't hard to keep the water in the 60's and my aquariums all stayed in the upper 60's.

Anyone around central fl. have some blue males they would like to swap for some of my males or females?  I want to setup a new breeding colony and would like to introduce some new genes to the colony.

Hey Ed,

I left my 96 blues(I think they r blues) out all winter in an above ground pool and I only lost two. We have had worse winters but even at that I have seen them in a river and a lake just a few miles from me(NW of Apopka). I know the water temp went down to 48 so they are tougher than advertised.

SW - 3 pair of those you gave me spawned over the weekend so Ed(the Ed who I split them with) should have some fry as well.

Hi Ed,

Yes I do heat my tanks and cover them with styrofoam.  When it gets really cold I stop my pumps and siphon leaving just the aerators going.

Good day all,  As I live in Cocoa, I am a little concerned about keeping these fish alive during the 3 weeks of winter that we experience in Central Florida.  So Mr. Sam, do you heat your tanks at all, or just let Mama Nature hve her way???

Welcome to our newest member Randy Proctor!  He has graciously offered fingerlings to those in the Jay Oklahoma area!  I will be adding a new "discussion forum" for that area! 

Here's what Randy is offering:

I think what SW is meaning is that when your fish are adults, you should not do more than 80 fish. My first batch of fish were 50 White Nile Tilapia in a 100 gal tank. As my fish grew, I added tanks and grow beds. Now, I use aquariums to keep my eye on the little ones and their water. A 40 gal aquarium can accommodate 100 frys easily. That is my opinion
