I realize many of you are probably past the introductory stage, but for those who aren't, there's an aquaponics introductory workshop scheduled to be held in Portland, ME on Nov 22 @ 6pm at the Urban…Continue

Just wondering what inspires people to grow using aquaponics. How big is your system and what are your future goals with aquaponics.

Heidi, the dome is built from scratch, the first video about it is here. I went with the dome because it's unique. They can also handle a large snow load without any internal support.
Don, you're welcome to stop in, just send me a private message when you want to do it so I know I"ll be around.
Comment by Heidi Burrows on March 18, 2012 at 7:28am Hey Rob I saw the pics of your dome - we are looking at greenhouses and i know you started with a basic Harbor Freight and now are expanding into the dome - Did you buy a kit or are you making your own? Also why the dome instead of a standard greenhouse? Just thought I would pick your brains as we are in ME and CT isn't much different in temp and snow. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
Comment by Don Z on March 17, 2012 at 7:50pm Rob, I saw some of the pictures you posted of the dome, looked really cool!! I would love to take a ride out to Eastford and check it out, next weekend maybe???
Hi Don,
I live in Eastford CT.. should be less than an hour's drive. I have a small greenhouse and currently building a large geodesic dome greenhouse.
Comment by Don Z on March 17, 2012 at 5:52pm Greetings New Englanders!!! I live in Hartford and am currently building a barrelponics system down in my basement. Really excited about this and would really like to see some other systems in action, so if you live anywhere in New England, other than Maine and Northern Vermont and would be interested in showing off your set up, let me know!!
the fish water goes down to about 36 so the water won't freeze. The fish just sit at the bottom of the tank for about 2 months and I stop feeding them....just a snack once in a while.
Comment by Roderick Jay on February 3, 2012 at 4:45pm Let's say you didn't heat the greenhouse during the winter, will the goldfish die, or just go into a hibernation? You're right about the electricity, that's an interesting project you've got with the dome.
there are more efficient ways to heat (and insulate) a greenhouse, but when it's 15 outside, it cost about $8 in electricity to heat that little greenhouse during the night. Sadly, it's far cheaper to get veggies from the grocery store during the winter.
Comment by Roderick Jay on February 3, 2012 at 12:48pm Insightful videos Rob. That helped put this into perspective.
I'm in CT and can extend my season by about 2 months on the spring and fall. A small electric heater keeps it going a bit long on the tougher nights. go to my YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/web4deb and scroll down to the older videos. These a bunch of them in there about my Harbor Freight 10x12...including some where I'm growing lettuce in the dead of winter.
