Grow bed plumbing

I built a grow bed for use with my 55 gallon tank using 3/4" plywood and a liner.  It will be housed in my basement.  I have the bell siphon built and am ready to install  and test.  The problem I am having is with the "bulkhead" going through the bottom of the bed.  My intention was to fashion the bulkhead using 1" threaded pieces and o-rings to connect the stand pipe to the drain plumbing underneath.  The problem I am running into is that I can't find any threaded pvc that have long enough…See More

Midwest viability question

My apologies! I intended to start a discussion but originally sent it as an e-mail.While researching AP I find myself longing for constant sunshine! I am wondering if AP is really sustainable in the midwest and financially feasable. I am working on setting up a small basement system to get started. Wondering what you all are finding out? See More

Hi Farrel!   Yeah, I am sorta doing the same thing as you.  New to aquaponics, and planning a basement system to sustain the basics during the winter months... lettuce and tomoatoes.   I'll see how it goes with me, but I can envision this turning into something larger, if my basement experiment goes successfully.   I might try a backyard project, during the summer months, if I can find a way to grow the fish large enough to harvest within the limitations of the weather :-)   The idea is exciting, even if I never see it come to fruitation.

Just curious.  How far is Ashton from Rockford?   When I was a college student, I frequently drove back and forth to Jacksonville, IL, so for all I know, I could have been driving near an Ashton exit.   I'm about 40 miles east of Rockford.
