Greg McCord replied to Philip Gauthier's discussion Build or Buy?? in the group Commercial Aquaponics
"Hi Philip. I would build it myself if I were you. The savings is well worth it and you could use that savings by either doing more media beds or raft beds that will pay you back more in the end. I also believe there is such a wonderful group you…"

Greg McCord replied to Bob Vento's discussion Why is Hydroton so expensive and what else will work for cheap?
"Yeah, I think RW has the best idea yet. And Matthew ideal of buying in bulk at the stone yard too. Lava rock on the bottom and a layer of Hydroton on the top would save your hands a lot of cuts and.scrapes."

Greg McCord replied to Bob Vento's discussion Why is Hydroton so expensive and what else will work for cheap?
"Good morning Bob. Yes I ran into the same problem. I have 8 media tanks to fill and they are 70 gallons each. I decided against Hydroton because it's so crazy expensive. I decided on lava rock. I know of many ladscape/stone yards that you can…"

Many people use lava rock (in OZ they call it scoria)

Few tips about lava rock,

1-you want to make sure the stuff you get was never used for industrial waste water filtration before being sold as landscape rock.

2-lava rock takes some extra washing as it tends to be really dusty.

3-it may tend to be bigger than you really want but you could use it in the bottom of the bed and then top the bed with something nicer if you have trouble getting the size you want.

Welcome Greg,

Thanks for joining the Aquaponic Gardening community!  I hope you find it a fun place to explore aquaponics.  There is a real blend of experienced and new aquapons in this community, so please don’t hesitate to get in there and start asking questions.  Everyone is quite happy to help out new members – no question is too basic.

A great place to start is to read the “How to Use This Site” link on the upper right corner, “Start Here” section of the Main page.  You might also find the “Aquaponic Gardening Rules of Thumb” guidelines helpful.

Please add a profile image, participate and check in with us every day!  We are constantly posting news about aquaponics and the good food movement.

Thanks again for joining us, and I look forward to getting to know you.

Sylvia
