"The general rule of thumb is that the grow bed needs about 40% of it's total volume to flood once it has media in it.  Of course that is very approximate and will become less as the roots take up space in the bed.  When figuring sump…"

Spring Time!

Ok, so its spring time and I've started building my system!  I've been building this thing for a month now, and it's still not ready.  What the hell was I thinking!!! Back breaking labor and $1k in parts and supplies!  This must be an addiction.  I'm just glad my wife doesn't realize how much I've spent on this little project.  If she ever figures it out, I'll be sleeping in my grow bed!     Ok, ok.  Enough whining.  So here's the update,  I've laid the gravel bed where I'll set up the…See More

Jake,

I have them made for me. We have a master mold and as I sell systems I can order more. My company is Pacific Aquaponics. www.pacificaquaponics.net

I know that some people make them out of wood and then lay up the fiberglass. It's heavier than a fiberglass only tank but they are very strong. Two good books are Composite Materials by John Wanberg and his follow up book Composite Materials #2

Probably the two best books out there. Hope that helps. Feel free to contact me anytime. Maybe our system will work for you.

Jake, the smaller glass tanks are 30 gal drilled commercial units that I bought used from a breeder that went out of business for 15 bucks apiece. The larger tanks are a 150 gal, 2 - 55 gal, and a 90 gal, all donated by friends and family. I then bought a diamond drill from eBay and drilled them all for 1 1/2" overflows. Steve.
