ALL THINGS COME TO HE WHO WAITS

I looked up the origin of this phrase and found it really isn't known but someone used it in a poem but the last line was that it comes to late.  I want to tell you of a story that the waiting pais off big time.  Kirsten (this site) is my partner in crime for looking for all things aquaponic.  We have been waiting together for quite some time for things that are economical.  I have wanted hallow tile blocks for almost 1 year now.  I need to raise my original troughs off the ground.  I want to…See More

Profile Information

How did you find us?
surfing aquaponic sites
Are you an aquaponic gardener already?
yes
If so, what type of system? (pick all that apply)
I have only being working at it for 4 months. I love to experiment to see what works best. My fish are very healthy, my water is good. My plants need iron I think. Does anyone know what type of iron is safe for the fish?
Please tell us something else about yourself.
I have lived in Hawaii off and on for over 42 years. The land is the love of my life. I really started going green about 10 years ago. I work in the medical field to support my fish habit.
I grew up on a 280 acre farm in Iowa and swore I would never be a farmer. I joined the Navy at 18 and beat feet out of Iowa. I ended up being stationed in heaven (Hawaii). I have left only once and will never do that again. Funny thing is I have become a farmer. I had only been doing aquaponics for a few months when I joined this site. Now it has been over a year. I now have 13 tanks all between 180 gals and 300 gal. I will have 17 when in a few weeks. I have a Masters in Biology and love doing experiments. My passion has transfered from parasites to Fish and vegetables. I just added some gravel beds to my farm. I had all troughs with rafts. I am now taking advantage of the WWOOFer program and getting wonderful help for my project. I love sharing aquaponics with everyone. I really love giving them some food off my beds.

EVERY DAY IS EARTH DAY

Posted on May 5, 2012 at 12:22am 4 Comments

That was what Kirsten and I told the participants in our class at the Honolulu Board of Water Supply on the 28th of April.  We told them that Earth Day was the 22 of April but we felt we all should honor the earth every day.  We had given a class on Economical Aquaponics for World Water day.  We were so well received that they had a spill over crowd and we gave another class on the 28th. Mostly the participants are an over 40 group who are very excited about aquaponics.  Some have started…

KUDOS TO ALL WHO GROW IN THE WINTER

Posted on January 29, 2012 at 1:43pm 5 Comments

The first thing I want to say is You people who grow in the winter are fabulous.  I couldn't pull it off.  I think about you (seriously) when I am out complaining about the hot sun and the lack of rain.  We got our first rain in 10 months the other night. Hallelujah It was about an inch.  I live on the dry side of Oahu.  I am so impressed when I read what all of you are doing.  It makes me believe that this movement is here to stay.  Keep it up we need everyone of you.

Merry Christmas and a Prospers New Year to All The Aquapons

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 10:38pm 5 Comments

I guess it is about time for some Hallelujahs and Thank You Jesus for this year that has almost passed.  There is so much to be thankful for.  First, I have a crew of 4 wonderful hard working WWOOFers living here.  They will stay at least 3 months which makes it really good.  You don't have to constantly retrain.  Tales is from Brazil and he is a biologist and loves the aquaponics.  I can trust him to take care of the fish ,  His friend Sandro is from Brazil also.  He has cleared all the…

My wife recently informed me that our elephant ear is Taro.  Any thoughts on whether this is a tasty variety?  I assume you wait until it is dormant to harvest but am not certain.  Any suggestions?

No, I don't Skype but I really should learn about it.  I believe you're right about assembling together. My husband said to tell you that we'd love to come visit you as soon as you tell us how we can DRIVE there since neither one one of us wants to fly!

I'm having trouble concentrating on anything other than getting my greenhouse set up for aquaponics. I have drawings and measurements and I"m pretty sure now how I'm setting it up.

My cow had her calf yesterday so I am training her to be milked now.  Today ended up pretty good with her standing still (AMEN!)

My hubby is home for the weekend and he just fixed me a burger....gonna go eat!   Take care!

Not much!  I came home and got right to work clearing out my greenhouse and getting a 300 gal. tank!  Still getting it situated.  Hope to have it ready for water in the next few weeks.  Raychel, you are a fabulous person and I really enjoyed meeting you.  If we don't see each other before, I'll see you "on the other side". ( But I do hope we can both do the 2012 conference!)

Hi Raychel,

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. My mini lanai system has been running very smoothly with the minor tweaks here and there. Thank you for your welcoming me to the site. You're right, it is great.

Aloha!

You mean for the meetup?  Whenever you want.  For home meetups the flow is different.  So name a start and end time that is convenient for you.  I'm sorry you cant make it to Olomana, that was the availability that Glenn had.
