The kite has landed!

Ohhhh its early and I am about to head to work but I wanted to get a short post up before I leave. As I described in my opening blog entry, I am in the middle of building a large greenhouse. I have an album of the build from the start in my Facebook page but I will post an updated picture of where I am later tonight when I have some more time. Anyways...So this weekend was when I planned on attaching the film. I had my little sister and brother in law helping along with my wife. They showed up…See More

I love growing weird varieties of veggies and coming up with new ways of doing things.

I work at Aquatic Eco-Systems as our aquaponics specialist and currently maintain/operate the demonstration farm located at our main location in Apapoka, Fl. I also help to design systems, trouble shoot probelms and teach at our semi annual workshops.

On top of this, I have started my own farm which I operate in the mornings/nights and on weekends. You can check out the progress at my website and facebook below...what can I say, I just can't get enough!

Chatterson Farms is born!

Well...where to start...

About eight and a half years ago I came across a paper buy this guy named Dr. James Rakocy. I probably read it 20 times in the next 2 days and by day 3 I was at the local home depot buying parts to construct a small aquaponics system. Im sure this is sounding very familiar to some of you... :)

I used a 150 gal tank, netted some tilapia out of a local pond and constructed a small NFT system out of 6, 10' pvc pipes (half 3"…

Your vegetables sure are beautiful. Some of them look more like pix than real. And those lettuces are so vibrant.

Hi Ryan,  I ended up using EPS foam, not the blue dow board.  I have 3 pound virgin foam and 2 pound virgin. The 3 pd is VERY strong, stronger then the blue...(my opinion) It's hard to even push my fingernail into it.

The 2 pd is 'all right'...not sure about 'long term'. I want to order 2 1/2 pound virgin and give it a try.

The reason I didn't use the blue...is I had a salesman call Dow to see about ordering some 2 inch. We told the lady on the phone what I was going to do with it....she mentioned that the blue dow has a fire retatdant chemical in it...(?)

Anyway, this fellow should be able to get what you want.....if you would mention my buddies name (Eric Christenson) when you call. :-)

Ryan love your system. Hope mine performs like yours once it is up and running. I see that you start your seedlings in a seeding tray but not in pots. Do you pull them and transplant into rafts and media beds using just media. Just curious. Thanks Dave.

Hi Ryan. I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to upload images from your phone, but I did hear of another person who I think had an issue with this - Ricky Flickenger. You may want to send him a comment and ask if he had this problem and how he was able to solve it, if he did. I know he was as enthusiastic as I was about the ability to interact with this site with our phones! I just haven't tried to upload any images that way yet.
