With all the commentary lately about food safety and such with aquaponics, Perhaps we need a thread that will let us work out our priorities. What tests/studies should we do first?AndPerhaps even…Continue

Are you an aquaponic gardener already?
Yes
If so, what type of system? (pick all that apply)
flood and drain media, raft, NFT, vertical, combination, Multiple systems. (build Started early 2008) Big system is currently about 700 gallons of fish tank, 1400 gallons of mostly flood and drain gravel grow beds and 300 gallons of sump tank. Running CHIFT PIST, constant pumping and have managed to use an indexing valve anyway. pH stays kinda high due to my well water and the shells that make up about 40% of my grow bed media. Initially fishless cycled, finished fishless cycling in March 2008 before getting fish. Have grown Channel Catfish from the beginning (March 2008) and have tried Blue Tilapia but we have decided the Catfish are a far better use of our resources and taste/grow better anyway and are easier to fillet. The Big system has had fish continually since March 2008. For a while I had something of a greenhouse over my main system but have had to take it down, Now I'm out in the elements in central Florida and doing fine with catfish.
How old is your system?
2 yrs or more
What type of fish do you grow with? (select all that apply)
Tilapia, Catfish
How big is your fish tank?
10 gallons, 100 gallons, 300 gallons, 700 gallons
Please tell us something else about yourself.
I'm planning to build an insulated, reinforced, thinshell concrete home and am into forest gardening and trying to create a food forest. We humanure compost and I highly recommend the Humanure Handbook by Joseph Jenkins. I also have Muscovy Ducks and chickens in my small yard to go along with everything else.

The often overlooked fish option that can handle the high temperatures like tilapia but also the cool temperatures like catfish but still be small enough for a 100 gallon tank and acceptable to eat for people who refuse fish who lack scales.

But my catfish still can't swim in a 4 square foot system!  At least not once they get to what I think of as eating size!!!!!

As long as you don't have to lift very high, airlifts can be effective, as soon as you are lifting very high it changes things and you suddenly need air pumps that can push air down under deeper water in order to lift water higher above the…

TCLynx replied to Roger Pilon's discussion 'Chelated Iron Dosing - Is there such a thing as a preventive dosing?'
While Iron is probably the most common deficiency in aquaponics, it is not the only thing that will cause yellowing of leaves. Take careful note of how the yellowing is occurring. Iron deficiency generally shows up in new growth first and it…

Do they offer rocky mountain whites?  They would probably also look attractive in a black tank and I don't think they require the water be especially warm since I think one of their parent speices is Blue Tilapia which are fairly tolerant…

I had problems with the bluegill dieing when I had them in a 100 gallon stock tank fish tank but since I moved them to the 300 gallon tanks, I think I have maybe lost 1 fish out of 100 which is about the same average I seem to run on the catfish in…

I'm confused Vlad, I thought on the previous page you said the DTPA was the one toxic to plants and now you seem to be saying the EDTA is the toxic one??????

I'm not that big a fan of Tilapia but.  What color is your fish tank?  I would say choose the species that will show up easiest in your fish tank to make them easier to see.  Like if you have a black or dark color tank, get the…

Thanks for your feedback on my forum questions. I did not realize you where so close to me. I am in Tavares, FL. It is a big benefit to have a knowledgeable local supplier. I would like to visit you at the Mt Dora Market.

Hey TC... Its been awhile. A simple question for ya, Has anyone ever used lava rock as grow media in there beds before? It's a lot more cheaper than hydroton here in Atlanta, GA. Were almost ready to begin to fill our grow tanks with media, but were on a budget. will it work OK? no PH issues? Thanks for any help. James and I sure enjoyed visiting your farm during the 2011 AP conferance. Greg & James
