With all the commentary lately about food safety and such with aquaponics, Perhaps we need a thread that will let us work out our priorities. What tests/studies should we do first?AndPerhaps even…Continue

Are you an aquaponic gardener already?
Yes
If so, what type of system? (pick all that apply)
flood and drain media, raft, NFT, vertical, combination, Multiple systems. (build Started early 2008) Big system is currently about 700 gallons of fish tank, 1400 gallons of mostly flood and drain gravel grow beds and 300 gallons of sump tank. Running CHIFT PIST, constant pumping and have managed to use an indexing valve anyway. pH stays kinda high due to my well water and the shells that make up about 40% of my grow bed media. Initially fishless cycled, finished fishless cycling in March 2008 before getting fish. Have grown Channel Catfish from the beginning (March 2008) and have tried Blue Tilapia but we have decided the Catfish are a far better use of our resources and taste/grow better anyway and are easier to fillet. The Big system has had fish continually since March 2008. For a while I had something of a greenhouse over my main system but have had to take it down, Now I'm out in the elements in central Florida and doing fine with catfish.
How old is your system?
2 yrs or more
What type of fish do you grow with? (select all that apply)
Tilapia, Catfish
How big is your fish tank?
10 gallons, 100 gallons, 300 gallons, 700 gallons
Please tell us something else about yourself.
I'm planning to build an insulated, reinforced, thinshell concrete home and am into forest gardening and trying to create a food forest. We humanure compost and I highly recommend the Humanure Handbook by Joseph Jenkins. I also have Muscovy Ducks and chickens in my small yard to go along with everything else.

TCLynx replied to Richard Joseph's discussion Size does matter! Or does it? How small can I go with the fish tank?
"Yes, fair summation.  Aquaponics can be done at any size but if you want to grow out bigger fish, you need a big enough tank for them (about 50 gallons would be a minimum for grow say a tilapia or bluegill, I'd go 300 gallons or 1000…"

TCLynx replied to Joe Bifano's discussion Murky water
"Scoop out the uneaten feed as best you can and feed less on the murky side.Make sure your flows through the pump and filtration are clear and unblocked.  If it is a timed flood and drain system you might want to switch it on 24/7 for a while to…"

"I'm not sure that mixing BT and Spinosad is appropriate.  I would also recommend extreme caution with spinosad around the aquaponics as I seem to recall reading the label and warnings about it being dangerous to aquatic life and I…"

"I'd probably stock less than 40-50 channel catfish in such a system.  Start with a slightly higher protein feed for small fingerlings (like a 5-10 pound bag from Aquatic eco) and before that is gone transition them only your normal food of…"

TCLynx replied to Elaine Sanders's discussion What's wrong with this plant?
"Maxicrop is a way to supplement trace elements and potassium.  It sounds like you are not dosing much so I'm not too worried about overdose but it is more common to dose every few weeks. As the guys say, you need to buffer up a bit. …"

TCLynx replied to Phil Bowyer's discussion Do I have this about right?

TCLynx replied to Allisyn Wood's discussion Organic nutrients??

TCLynx replied to Bob Vento's discussion Need for the Aeration of the fish tank?
"Water returning to the fish tank does provide some aeration, but is it enough is usually the question. And in a HOT climate the hot season can mean very warm water that doesn't hold much Oxygen in the first place and if you have a heavy fish…"

TCLynx replied to Brandon Lee's discussion My greatest concern is FISH TANK MATERIAL. Is there a place where I can quickly see the pros and cons of different materials?

TCLynx replied to emmanuel nsanga's discussion Do you think my system is going to work?
"20 kg of fish is the MAX, you can always have less fish. beware that a 1000 liter per hour pump probably won't pump 1000 liters per hour once you make it pump through pipe up to your grow bed.  You need to make sure your pump will move at…"

TCLynx replied to Ian Hawkins's discussion water analysis results - can someone help please?

Thanks for the welcome TCLynx... Don't know much about planting or keeping fishes but I'm a nerd, so I can learn anything and can follow instructions :)  Looks like a good place to start.  Looking forward to learning with everyone here and be able to be self-sustaining. Being in FL, we're also looking into solar power.
