- We started with a 40 gallon rubbermaid tote system in our basement, then added multiple 10 gallon and a 20 gallon aquarium sized systems growing lettuce and various herbs.
Just finished building a 380 gallon 4'x 8' two tier Growing Power style system for the Growhaus project.
We added two 275 gallon IBC fish tanks with yellow perch, and tilapia. They support four growbeds with lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, strawberries and other misc.
Looking to add some vertical elements in the near future, as well as moving outside this spring.
- Please tell us something else about yourself.
- We started an aquaponics business and work with home owners, non-profits and communities to install small to medium sized aquaponics systems. We love the excitement and interest that people have when they first hear about the concept.
We also have 7 month old twins and a 3 year old who loves to "help" with planting and harvesting. Some days are just too busy.

I'm sure that I have missed this along the way. I know that Nate uses a specific fiber media in his towers that was purchased from a supply company that only sells in bulk. I have also noticed that other people have setup towers. What media is everyone else using? I have investigated pads for air conditioners, swamp coolers, green scrubby sponges, floor buffers, Coir mats, etc. Looking for the solution that works for others, fits well in the 6" x 6" fence post, is inexpensive, easy to get and… Continue

Thank you to Sylvia for getting this blog off the ground. I agree completely that aquaponics is addicting. Within a week of discovering the concept, we started building three systems, signed up for an aquaponics workshop at Nelson and Pade and decided to change professions to make aquaponics a business. We have already had the pleasure of connecting with a passionate group of people that are working to make aquaponics a reality for themselves and others. Thank you! Wow, you do have a lot going on. You are so very right and it takes a business minded person to run a commercial farm. It is a business first and diversifying and utilizing all of your available talents only help insure success. I watch what you guys are doing too and am so very impressed as well!
I actually have had the opportunity and pleasure to talk to Marianne recently about the RFC and the work Sylvia and I have been doing for the Aquaponics Association. Marianne seems like an incredible, dynamic and passionate lady and we are looking forward to working with her in some capacity with both organizations and for me to get to meet her this September.
I wish you were going to be able to come in September, but I am guessing someone must hold down the fort, especially with a 15,000 sqft greenhouse underway. Incredible! Please tell JD I look forward to meeting him and hopefully soon maybe I will make my way out there to meet you and see your operation.
