"THE BEST ANSWER IS WHATEVER WORKS BEST FOR YOU.   In general, 10-12 inches is the most commonly recommended depth, but given the conditions for your local area, your systen setup, your system conditions, and the plants you are trying to grow,…"

"Well I know there are many Australians that use what is called blue metal there.  I've never encountered such aggregate myself.  Find out if it is granite, if so it should be fine. "

"I got a 2 lb package of them a few years back and I used a few hand fulls of the worms from my worm bin in the system when I started my firs system up. So I'm using them for both. "

"You can test to see if something is going to react and raise you pH by pouring some vinegar in a container to cover some of the gravel. If it fizzes up big time, then there is probably a lot of calcium carbonate and it will keep your pH too high if…"

"Quartz is generally translucent and mostly yellow and brown in color. If it looks powdery white then don't use it as it may be limestone. "

"Gravel. Well the 1/2" brown or white river rock commonly available around Florida works well (just make sure it is quartz type of river gravel since limestone and marble would not be good.) However, even larger like a size range that varies…"

I have an outdoor 250 gallon tank with about 20 mature tilapias that are the product from 2 small tilapias that my son purchase at Morningstar fisherman about 2 years ago. We have a water growing bed with small rocks and we grow basil, tomatoes, corn, letters, and peppers. We have about 100 fingerlings but we are limited on the space.
Please tell us something else about yourself.
I started this project with my son (now 12) to do something fun and get us closer to nature. It has grown to an addiction and we spend quality time working on it. My son’s school came to see the project and I had to be the teacher for the day explaining the ammonia cycle and way nature work in harmony. The class did not realize they would have a test on it.
